If you’ve been THINKING about starting your fashion business for three months or more without taking any action it could be because you don’t want to waste time or money producing the wrong products.
Perhaps you’re worried that all of your ideas, so far, might not be original enough to sell….. and you want to create a really ORIGINAL brand that goes VIRAL!
Well I’m about to give you a method that’s going to help you find the best concept and most original product for your fashion business so that you can stop procrastinating and FINALLY get started!!!
You see the biggest mistake I see most designers making is that they think they have to create a huge range of designs and they don’t focus enough on any SPECIFIC original product that would best suit the personality, lifestyle, finances and resources of themselves and their customers. Its a bit like throwing all your darts at a dart board blind-folded and just hoping that one will hit the bulls-eye!
Unless you have a huge team and budget you need to focus on a specific product range. You see, what starts to happen when you focus on too many products is that you waste time and money going in scattered directions and your brand has no clear identity so your customer is confused.... And we all know a confused customer never buys!
Too many designers make the mistake of designing a large range that lacks originality without having the manpower or money to produce such a diverse range effectively….. Then they wonder why they end up with lots of returns! They’ve been working 18 hour days 7 days a week for months designing and perfecting every little detail and can't understand why no-one is buying their products!
I know… it’s extremely frustrating and you more than likely feel that you just want to scream to everybody how good your designs are!!! “They’re really amazing … it’s going to be the biggest trend!... Why don't you get it?”... But you’re also depressed because you’re working sooo hard and keep losing money with no profits in sight. You might even be wondering how long you can keep going like this!
Well, I have at least 8 different methods that will help you create original designs around your talents, experiences, lifestyle and resources. I want you to start taking action now but I don’t want to bamboozle you any more than you probably already are so I'm just going to give you one of those methods right now... All the others are in “Fashion Entrepreneurs Academy” but with this one method you’ll be able to create the most original products by the end of today. So, if that’s good with you let’s dive in.
The one method I'm going to give you here is the “Quantative Relation” method. Here you get to play with your ideas!…. Playing with proportions when designing can lead you to lots of great design concepts and original product ideas.
You can apply this method to both the flat or the 3D Draping methods (these are all covered in FEA) but today I am going to talk specifically about how Quantative Relation applies to the flat method.
So first you want to look at your existing designs and re-trace a few of those. For those of you who are completely new to this. I'll explain briefly what I mean by re-trace: You can buy special lay-out pads which consist of a semi transparent paper that allow you to trace your designs. Tracing paper is too transparent and typing paper too opaque whereas the paper in lay-out pads provides the most suitable weight and transparency. You can also use a light box or shine a light under a glass table.
Now look at your designs closely and imagine how each would look with different proportions. Try out each of your ideas by changing specific proportions and scales on different areas... for example lengthening or shortening the body or the sleeves; making the hems or sleeves wider or narrower; try oversized, then shrunken. Try as many variations as you can think of in very quick sketch format.
Question your choices and ask things like “do large balloon sleeves and a large puffy skirt look great together or would the large balloon sleeve have more prominence if there was more contrast and the skirt was not so puffy"...... "Would a huge bow look overpowering on a really flouncy bodice or does it make a strong statement" or "Does this oversized T-shirt look better long or cropped?" etc.... Question everything. There are no rules here. You are making your own rules.
Keep playing around with various proportions and scales until you have exhausted all variations. Each initial design idea when you explore it like this and start further development could lead you to 10, 30 or even more different variations of each original design. The design ideas are only limited by your own imagination and if this process leads you to new ideas then after going through this process start exploring those too.
When you are doing this you want to carefully consider how each of these changes affects the mood of each design. Proportions create a specific feeling in a garment. They can make a garment look older, cheaper, more classic, more expensive, luxurious, edgy, casual, younger or more sexy. Ask yourself “does that mood align with the values of my brand?" Then pick out your favourites and start to further develop those. Finally of course you want to edit them to a very small range but we talk more about that in my next workshop.
The more exciting and original your designs are the easier they will be to sell …. So have a go and see what exciting ideas you can create from the “Quantative Relation” method.
